Then I got a phone call. A few weeks ago I received a ring from College Republican National Committee Chairman Charlie Smith- a great guy, and a Denver-ite to boot. The offer was simple: go to the Democrat National Convention, help lead protests, and have fun. The role was specified simply as “freedom-fighter.”
While I would absolutely love to go to the DNC to watch and observe (yes, I am a political dork), getting to play a role, albeit a contrarian one, is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Flights to Denver are affordable. despite priceline.com’s attempts otherwise. Anywho, I’m 22- I don’t really need a savings account.
A downside to these great opportunities is that I’ll miss the first two weeks of school, something that’ll make the remaining fourteen weeks difficult. I won’t be around to help with the crucial recruiting push for College Republicans, and will miss a CR meeting for the first time in my collegiate career. I’ll also miss two weeks of the season for my beloved Atlanta Braves, but judging the way we’ve been playing the past few weeks/ months, that may not be a horrible thing.
If after reading all this you think I’m some crazy right winger, well you’re right and you’re wrong. I am a strong supporter of the Republican Party, and am proud of the role I play. But my loyalty is based off principles rather than blind faith. I realize my party has a lot of problems and I oppose multiple key planks of the platform. Honestly, if I were to pick one individual that my ideology is most closely aligned with, I’d easily say John Stossel. (I read Give Me a Break regularly- you should too!)
As for the blog, as I’ve said before I’ll clearly separate between observation and opinion, with a higher focus on the former. Should be a fun ride!
